An introduction to the practice of the Earth Treasure Vases
and day-long pilgrimage in NYC
Part I: Introduction to the Earth Treasure Vases
Friday September 20, 7-9:30 pm
Part II: Earth Treasure Vase pilgrimage
Saturday September 21, 9am-5pm
Everyone is invited to an evening gathering for global healing as Village Zendo welcomes Cynthia Jurs, dharma teacher and author of Summoned by the Earth, and Rick Jansen to share Gaia Mandala Global Healing Community’s Earth Treasure Vases practice.
Our time together will include group dialogue and a reflection about Village Zendo’s connection to this healing practice in the aftermath of 9/11 and its relevance now. The Village Zendo was entrusted with one of the first of these vases after 9/11 by Zen teacher Wendy Johnson. Judy Seicho Fleischman will share her and Marco Seiryu Wilkinson’s reflections on the poignancy of that time and the process of locating where to “plant” that vase and journeying together with Cynthia, Enkyo Roshi, and VZ sangha and dharma friends to Inwood Park for that purpose. Cynthia will speak about her journey and give an overview about the ETV practice and how it has evolved over the decades. Rick will share his perspective as a member of the Gaia Mandala and his recent experience taking a vase to Tibet. This will be followed by inviting all participants to share comments, questions, or concerns and be in dialogue with the speakers. Cynthia and Rick then will speak about Saturday’s pilgrimage, which will set out from Village Zendo in the morning. Our gathering will conclude with a short meditation to focus intentions and prayers for the NYC ETV as a “node” on the global healing mandala.
We look forward to being together in this way as autumn arrives.

Cynthia Jurs became a dharma teacher (Dharmacharya) in the Order of Interbeing of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh in 1994, and in 2018 was made an honorary lama in the Vajrayana tradition of Tibetan Buddhism in recognition of her dedication in carrying out the Earth Treasure Vase practice. Inspired by thirty years of pilgrimage into diverse communities and ecosystems today, Cynthia is forging a new path of dharma in service to Gaia—a path deeply rooted in the feminine, honoring indigenous cultures and devoted to collective awakening. Cynthia leads meditations retreats, courses, and pilgrimages to support the emergence of a global community of engaged and embodied sacred activists. You can find her offerings at GaiaMandala.net.
