Village Zendo Dharma Salon

Friday, May 1
6:30pm – 8:00pm
In-Person and Online

Please join us on May 1 for the Village Zendo’s first Dharma Salon of 2026.

Dharma Salon offers an occasion for Zendo sangha members and friends to share art, film, music and other creative expressions and explore their connections to the dharma.

Each salon will feature a presentation and a conversation about the influence of our practice on the material, followed by a gathering with light snacks and beverages.

Our first Dharma Salon will feature a private screening of Lay Lefty Down, a new short film by Sensei Traven Fusho Rice, with a conversation between Fusho and filmmaker Jean Yugetsu Carlomusto.

Lay Lefty Down (15:00) is a dark comedy that will resonate with anyone who has gone through breast cancer treatment or has had someone close to them go through it. The film was funded by over 300 passionate supporters who continue to follow its progress. It’s a big-hearted conversation starter that offers a safe way for people to share their own experiences, and to feel less alone while going through the trials and tribulations of diagnosis and treatment.

Sensei Traven Fusho Rice is a journalist and filmmaker who helps people feel less alone by telling stories with humor and heart. She brings a strong presence and joyful perspective to all her projects. Using storytelling to foster connection is her lifelong passion. She is the co-founder of Lo-Down Productions in NYC and the host of The Lo-Down Culture Cast, where she interviews local culturechangers from all walks of life.

Jean Yugetsu Carlomusto is a New York filmmaker, AIDS activist, and interactive media artist. She produced and directed HBO’s Emmy nominated documentary, Larry Kramer in Love & Anger, which was featured at the Sundance Film Festival. Her works have been exhibited internationally in festivals, museums and on television.
