On Sunday, June 21st, the Village Zendo community was privileged to receive a Dharma talk given by T. Griffith Foulk, Professor of Religion at Sarah Lawrence College.
Professor Foulk’s talk centered on Eihei Dogen’s Gabyo (aka “Painted Cake” or “Painting of a Rice Cake”). He offered a line-by-line discussion of much of the text, provided context and took questions from the community.
A detailed picture of Dogen’s teaching in this fascicle emerged as Professor Foulk blended together observations gained from decades of experience as a translator and avid reader of Zen literature, as well as a Zen practitioner both in the U.S. and in Japan.
This podcast should be of great interest to meditators generally and to Zen practitioners particularly.
NB: In this talk, Prof. Foulk references a new translation of Gabyo, the text of which can be found here. Gabyo-Painted Cakes-SZTPtrans
