In this talk from our summer retreat Shuso Sesshin, Enkyo Roshi finds her own deep inspiration in our study text, Dogen’s “Bendowa.” She asks “Why do we practice?” and finds a clear answer from Dogen. Although the Dharma permeates everyone, we must realize it, and actualize it through practice. To live our best selves, we can’t do it without practice. We may read about running, painting, music or Zen, but only in the actual doing of it is the richness and depth experienced. Roshi retells a story from Dogen of Shakyamuni Buddha’s Ango retreat, and also talks about Sangha togetherness, and the subtle power of Zen forms. Recorded August 18th 2018.
