In this talk, Roshi describes the troubling and difficult times we now face. The optimism of only five years ago seems to be a thing of the distant past, as a new reversion seems to be talking hold, a tribalism that turns away from the world as a connected whole: a chasm of us and them. Roshi sees in herself an urge to protect “our” vision of the world and to cast out the “other” as they want to cast out us. What is the Buddhist response? Roshi turns to the energies of Manjushri and Avalokiteshvara for guidance. She then talks about the need for the connection to oneness – the Dharmakaya – the body of reality. This brings her to the koan case 52 from the Book of Serenity “Caoshan’s Reality Body.” The ass looks into the well and sees itself. The well looks out at the ass and sees no distinctions.
