The Village Zendo Scholarship Fund

Provides Financial Assistance for Dharma Study

The Village Zendo is committed to providing financial assistance to those who are unable to afford the cost of VZ programs and events.  We make this assistance available through the Village Zendo Scholarship Fund, which is wholly funded by private donations from the Village Zendo community.

The VZ Scholarship Fund can provide financial assistance for those wishing to:

  • Become formal students at the Village Zendo.
  • Attend retreats and zazenkais.
  • Attend VZ educational programs and events.

Requests for assistance from the Village Zendo Scholarship Fund are reviewed by the Village Zendo Scholarship Committee, consisting of  Roshi Pat Enkyo O’Hara, Sensei Barbara Joshin O’Hara, and Sensei Randall Ryotan Eiger.  Requests for assistance should be directed to Ryotan Sensei at scholarships@villagezendo.org.

Scholarship requests are evaluated by the Committee based on a person’s committed relationship with the Zendo and the committee members’ knowledge of their life circumstances and practice.  Those who have not yet established a relationship with the Zendo and its teaching staff may build that relationship by:

  • Regular attendance at zazen.
  • Regular participation in liturgy practice and training.
  • Assisting in the care and maintenance of the Zendo and in the implementation of special events.
  • Attending VZ community events.

These relationship-building activities, which help us get to know you and you get to know us, are available at no cost to those who don’t have the means to make a voluntary donation.   Each of these activities is indispensable to studying the Dharma in our community.

Please don’t allow financial hardship to stand in the way of your sincere commitment to study the Dharma and full participation in our community.  The Village Zendo Scholarship Committee stands ready to provide the assistance you need to sustain and intensify your practice through difficult times.
