I'm trying to photograph the absolute and the relative together: on the one hand, these are photos of sacred rituals, and on the other hand, it's just a bunch of ordinary New Yorkers doing something pretty unglamorous. Editing this project has been very difficult. I have to keep to a narrow path, not falling into the smarmy New Age romanticism with which pop culture depicts Zen, and also not falling into any cynicism in my attempt to be "objective". Somewhere in between is my actual experience of the Village Zendo: regular people profoundly committed to realizing the way.
