Expression is the interaction of you with this moment, with this reality—with everything that is going on around you.—Roshi Pat Enyko O'Hara from "The Five Expressions"
"True Expression" or "Dotoku" is the name of our Village Zendo temple and of this Journal of sangha voices.
One of the Five Expressions of Zen, says Enkyo Roshi, is communication—a word whose root includes concepts of "holding in common," "exchanging together," "shared by all." And the Arts, of course, are an aspect of communication. As Roshi says, we express our true nature through the arts, and thereby express the Dharma.
Our sangha is extraordinarily rich in the creative arts. And so we devote this issue of the Journal to a sampling of these expressive riches—music, poetry, visual and media arts. We invite you to savor, to enjoy—and, by all means, to respond.

to lend their voices to this journal. We welcome thoughts on practice, recommendations for books, movies, plays, art shows, contributions of a poem or quote or joke that express the dharma — or personal news such as a special accomplishment or an unusual trip. This journal is intended as a forum for voices of the sangha. Let us hear yours!
