I started this band, the Zagnut Cirkus Orkestar, because I saw a village wedding in Northern Greece in 1999. The local musicians were walking in the deserted streets of the small village I was visiting and filling it with a most joyous sound. They had started at the groom's house and then walked about four blocks to the bride's house. They ducked inside, and although my friend and I stayed outside, we could hear all sorts of happy voices inside the house and more music. After about a half-hour, everybody emerged and started up the hill to the church. We followed at a respectful distance. I was filled with happiness. This moment has inspired me ever since and I work to bring the immediacy and intimacy of live, joyful music to the village of New York City.
