Work For Dharma Day
Dear Members and Friends of the Village Zendo,
This year marks a milestone in the growth of the Village Zendo community. Ten years ago we moved from our quarters on Varick Street to a larger practice space at 588 Broadway, a sign of our expanding commitment to practicing in the city where we live and work.
There have been many transformations since we moved to our place on Broadway. Ten years ago Enkyo Roshi (then Enkyo Sensei) was our only teacher. Today, the Zendo has five fully-accredited teachers and three assistant teachers, with our most recent Dharma Holder, Deirdre Eisho Peterson, receiving empowerment in February.
Meanwhile, sanghas led by Enkyo Roshi’s successors grow and thrive in Philadelphia and Northampton, Massachussetts. And the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care, led by VZ Dharma Holders Koshin Paley-Ellison and Robert Chodo Campbell, continues to expand, providing compassionate education programs, meditation and direct care to the sick and terminally ill.
The growth of the Village Zendo community in these past ten years has been impressive. But like the growth of any institution, the development of the Village Zendo depends on continued nourishment, support and care, and especially upon the generous financial support of the members and friends of our community.
That’s why we ask you to open your hands and hearts, and respond generously to Work for Dharma Day, the Village Zendo’s spring fundraising appeal. Work for Dharma Day is an opportunity for each of us to nourish the life of the Zendo and the practice of its sangha. To participate in Work for Dharma Day, simply pledge to donate all or a portion of the income you earn on Tuesday, May 14 to the Village Zendo. No amount is too small or too large. We all participate equally. We each pledge ourselves to support an organization that does so much to enrich our lives by providing an oasis of calm and contemplation in the heart of New York City.
